What is Powered Paragliding?

Powered Paragliding is an ultralight aviation sport that involves the pilot using a paramotor to provide thrust helping him or her get into the air while using a paraglider (kite) for lift.

What is the average equipment cost?

For brand new gear, you can expect to spend $7,000-$10,000 for your paramotor unit, and $3,500-$5,000 for the paraglider wing.

Used gear can be found at a lower cost but requires careful selection to ensure it is reliable and safe.

How high can you fly a powered paraglider?

We can legally get up to 18,000 feet. However, we typically fly between 500-2000 feet.

Is training needed to learn to fly PPGs?

Paramotoring is an extreme sport. While training is not required, it is highly recommended. For the trained pilot, this is a very safe sport. However, it can be very dangerous if not handled appropriately.

REGULATION

The sport is regulated by FAR Part 103 and USPPA

“Our sport is basically self-regulated so you are not required by law to be a certified pilot. However, proper training makes it far more likely for you to learn to fly safely and to properly navigate an ever more crowded and sensitive airspace. The theory is that a pilot operating such a light vehicle has a much lower damage potential to non-participants. No effort is made to keep the actual participants safe – Only the non-participants. That is why it is critical that new entrants take training seriously. Just because the training is not REQUIRED does not mean it is any less necessary to ensure YOUR survival!

Powered Paragliders fall into the category of Ultralights. In the United States, the regulations that apply to ultralights are in the Federal Aviation Regulations (FAR), Part 103.
